Preparing for your first legal appointment
Direct answer: Bring identification, a short description of the issue, every important deadline, the names of other parties, the most relevant documents and a list of questions. Tell us whether you prefer English, Vietnamese or bilingual explanation. Do not send extensive confidential information until the firm has checked conflicts and confirmed a secure process.
Before providing detailed information
An enquiry does not mean the firm has agreed to act. Legal Care Australia must first check conflicts, confirm the service is accepted and provide engagement information. If a deadline is imminent, state the exact date immediately and continue taking reasonable steps to protect your position.
For immediate danger, contact emergency services. The 24/7 enquiry system is not emergency legal representation.
Communication preferences
- Preferred spoken language: English, Vietnamese or another language.
- Preferred written language.
- Whether bilingual explanation would help.
- Whether you request an interpreter.
- Safe telephone number and email address.
- Safe times and methods for contact.
- Whether voicemail or identifying messages may be left.
- Any accessibility requirement.
Language preference is separate from consent to receive marketing. The firm should ask for marketing consent separately.
Conflict-check information
- Your full legal name and former names.
- Exact names of every other party.
- Company, trust, business or property names involved.
- Names of related parties where relevant.
- Previous lawyers or proceedings.
At the initial stage, provide names and a broad description—not your complete confidential history.
Essential issue summary
Prepare five points:
- What happened?
- What do you need help with?
- What is the next deadline or event?
- What outcome are you hoping to achieve?
- What has already been agreed, filed, paid or signed?
Documents to bring
- Photo identification.
- The principal contract, notice, court order, decision or letter.
- Documents showing the deadline.
- A one-page chronology.
- Important correspondence.
- Existing legal documents or agreements.
- Relevant financial information requested for the service.
- A list of documents you know exist but cannot access.
Do not bring thousands of unsorted messages. Select the most important material and ask how the remaining records should be provided.
Preparing the chronology
For each significant event, record:
- date;
- people involved;
- what occurred;
- document supporting it;
- why it matters.
If a date is approximate, say so. Do not guess or change facts to make the chronology appear stronger.
Questions for the lawyer
- What legal issues need to be addressed first?
- What deadlines apply?
- What options are available?
- What information or evidence is missing?
- What work is included in the proposed scope?
- What is excluded?
- What are the fee, deposit and payment arrangements?
- Who will be responsible for the matter?
- What is the next action and expected communication process?
Appointment and payment
- Confirm date, time and whether the appointment is in person, by telephone or video.
- Confirm the current consultation fee and payment method.
- Read cancellation and rescheduling information.
- Arrive or connect early enough to address technical issues.
- Ensure you have privacy for the consultation.
- Do not record the consultation without permission.
After the appointment
- Review the advice and written scope.
- Ask questions about anything unclear.
- Sign a costs agreement only after understanding it.
- Pay the required deposit through verified instructions.
- Use the secure upload method requested.
- Record your next action and deadline.
- Tell the firm promptly if circumstances or contact details change.
What happens next?
Legal Care Australia provides lawyer-led legal assistance in English and Vietnamese across confirmed practice areas. Technology may help collect information and arrange the next step, but legal advice is provided by a lawyer after conflict clearance and engagement.
Client next step: Choose your preferred language and request an appointment. Initially provide only your contact details, other-party names, broad practice area and any urgent deadline.
General information about preparing for an appointment. It does not create a solicitor–client relationship or confirm the firm can act.
